Best study techniques for biology?

Does anyone have a recommendation for how best to study biology.  After having taken two years of biology, I'm still struggling with the best way to prepare for tests.  Any advice?

I have found that creating my own flash cards has helped me a lot.  Just piling back through the book and lecture notes often leaves me disinterested and does not translate to the best results.  On the other hand, the process of capturing the key ideas on flash cards, and then quickly going through my own 'quiz' really helped me stay on top of the important concepts.

I should say that the process of creating the flash cards is as valuable as actually using them.  The are also very helpful when it comes to the big multi-chapter tests (mid-terms and finals).
